How to Propagate String of Hearts

If you’re looking for a low-maintenance, beautiful plant for your living space, look no further than the string of hearts.

This trailing succulent is native to South Africa and has become popular because it’s easy to care for and requires minimal effort.

The best part? You can propagate it easily with just a few simple steps. Let’s get started!

Step #1: Gather Your Supplies

First, you’ll need some supplies before you start propagating.

Start by gathering scissors or shears, a pot for planting, soil mix that drains well (like cactus mix or succulent mix), and lastly a shallow bowl of water.

Once you have all the necessary supplies, it’s time to move on to step two.

Step #2: Cut Off a Piece of String Of Hearts

Once your supplies are gathered, you’ll need to remove a piece of the string of hearts from the main plant.

To do this, use scissors or shears and make sure the piece is at least four inches long with two or more leaves attached.

Next, place the cutting in the bowl of water so that it can callus over for about two weeks before planting.

Step #3: Planting Your Cutting

After two weeks have passed and the cutting has had time to callus over, it is time to plant your new string of hearts cutting in the soil!

Fill your pot with soil until it is almost full then gently press down around the edges so that there is an indentation in the center large enough for your cutting’s roots.

Then press down firmly around where the roots will be planted and water thoroughly until moisture begins seeping out from underneath into a dish beneath your pot.

Place in bright indirect light until new growth appears!

Conclusion

With just three easy steps—gathering supplies, cutting off a piece of string of hearts, and planting—you will soon have multiple plants growing from one original cutting!

Propagating string of hearts can be done seasonally throughout spring and summer months and will bring years worth of joy if cared for properly! Good luck!
